Tesla Model 3 'Highland' soft close frunk motor installation & review (spoiler: it's brilliant!!)
In this video I address one of the (few) weak points of the Model 3 - having to lean on the frunk to close it.
If you have sore wrists or simply don't want to get dirty hands, this is one of the few pain points of this car but, in this video, I remove the need to ever have to close it this way again! AND, as if that wasn't enough, this also enhances the security of the car as, should you accidentally open the frunk via the app while miles from the car, this installation will force close the frunk after 90 seconds, saving you the risk of having any items stolen from your car.
If you would like to install this on your own car (and I recommend you do), click on this link to make a purchase:

This video introduces improvements to my Tesla Model '3 Highland', both from Tesla's own big software update (V12) but also from the really quite impressive Enhance Auto 'Commander' module and accompanying 'S3XY buttons'. 14 days on the Fast 800 diet - what to expect.
Thank you, I think it's helpful, gonna try this
That's nice and all but I'd still rather have it open & close by the push of a button like the trunk, IMHO 🙂.
Me, too, mate. Me, too!
What about the warranty of the car? If this third party fails or another issue with the car will appear, then the Tesla service will have a good excuse to refuse repair due to this transfaction.
Honestly, I’m not worried. It doesn’t interfere with anything, so shouldn’t cause any such issues with the warranty, and it’s so easy to install and remove, if needed.
Another great video and the installation was so well explained Something I will be getting via your link Nice one Paul
Thanks so much - appreciate the support.
Nice 👍. I’ve installed the Hansshow power frunk on both my Tesla 2021 M3LR and 2023 MYLR . It’s a great feature . The hardest part was swapping out the standard struts for the power ones. This install looks a lot easier with similar functionality. I notice Hansshow now also sell this soft close kit. I assume the emergency mechanical release is also supplied but not mentioned in your video?
There was no mention of an emergency mechanical release, but I did see a video where someone installed this kit and then simulated an issue and the frunk still opened without an issue, albeit it took a couple of processes.
@@PaulsViewsReviews Yes in the extremely unlikely event of low voltage battery death 🪫 access to the frunk can still be achieved by applying current to 12/16v battery via the emergency tow opening on the front bumper .
@@bikersydney5653that’s good to know - thank you.
Great video and upgrade idea. One reason you need a Low Voltage battery is to drive the High Voltage contactor coil so that it open and closes when the car is off or on respectively. Also, all the electronics works off low voltage. High voltage is only used to drive the motor(s) and top-up the LV battery.
Thank you! I assumed the 12v battery was to power the more traditional car electronics but thanks for clarifying 👍🏼
Really enjoyed this guide and we don't even own a tesla😀
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have always hated how the frunk is closed. I just ordered mine. Thank you.
You're more than welcome - honestly, it's a game changer! Should have been on the car as standard, but at least it is an easy install retrospectively. Enjoy - you'll love it!
Hey Paul love this gadget. Do they fit 2019 Models?
They sure do - there is a version especially for that year's model. Click on the link and it's an option on the Tlyard site. Enjoy!
@@PaulsViewsReviews Thanks mate 👍
Any potential failure with this upgrade in the future? It's going to be a bad headache one it gets broken.
I don't think so - I could remove it in 10 minutes and the frunk will se able to open if the motor fails without issue, from what I can see.
Mind boggles as to why it doesn't come as standard with the soft close. I worry that over time me pressing it down is going to bend the tip on the bonnet so will certainly be checking one of these kits out thanks.
Totally agree! Tesla should have included this element with the car but I’m so glad I’ve added it. I was also worried about accidental damage - to the car or my wrists, eventually. Problem solved!
I love it!
Me, too!!
I bought the centre console accessory trays you have in your Tesla and they are great!
They're good, aren't they! I like the detail on them, such as the rear one having that little gap for the power cable to come up from the USB-C underneath and the little finger grip to slide the front one back and forth. They transform what are great, but potentially disorganised, spaces! Next thing for me will be some sort of organiser for the frunk and lower trunk/boot - so much space but too much freedom for things to move. Watch this space and I'll hopefully be reviewing some solutions soon!
If this still isn't enough you can use a roof box
Very true! Roof bars are a bit expensive for the Tesla, but it is an option.
What is the max load of this car? There might be space but it can become more than allowed load.
Pretty high - it's all available here: www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/model3/en_us/GUID-877ACE2D-B62F-4596-A6AD-A74F7905741C.html
Stop calling it Highland. stupid blogspam nonsense
It’s a key search word so I have to include it for now to ensure people find my video. Analytics, algorithms and all that!
Good review, but you have it wrong. The 5:2 diet is 500 women & 600 calories for men for 2 days and the remaining 5 days eat normally.
Actually, in the original book, it was 800 calories. It was updated at a later date.
What about 3 kids in the back seat? 2 with booster seats - perhaps of a particularly slim type and 1 without any booster seat - probably sitting in the middle? Is the middle seat actually useful - or really just a space for the armrest to occupy? :D
I wouldn’t want to sit between two booster seats, I have to admit. To be honest. The only car I’ve owned which I would put a passenger through that experience was my Audi Q7, which had 3 full sized seats.
How come all the new Teslas have those big mud flaps at the front? They look awful
Not sure - that just how it arrived. I don’t mind them, though.
@@PaulsViewsReviews small neat and moulded ones would look way better
Very helpful video. 👍
Happy to help!
Hey Paul, great video as always! I hope you find our product perfectly fitting for all the family both from protecting you from the heat and playing in the Tesla! 😄 Concerning the windshield shade, try to put the clips a bit further out and it should work perfectly! And as @stephentsai said you can also flip down the sunshade if needed.
Thank you! The products are fab - really great quality and clearly with plenty of thought given to them to make sure they compliment the Tesla perfectly, from the shades folding down into the exact size of the under-boot to the USB adaptor fitting into the small glovebox.
Re: Front windshield shade. You can flip down the sunshades to help support the top of the shade from flopping
Thanks, buddy. Appreciate that
Its amazing how inaccurate calorie burning calculators are for fitness machines and watches. They always factor in BMR within it (the calories you would have burnt even lying down). So if its saying you burnt, 300 its likely you only burnt 150. So you should only eat 150 extra calories
All we can take into account is what we have access to, and if that motivates people then the inaccuracies are of little matter. The important thing is that people are on the move!
Very interesting accessory
Simple but extremely useful and filling an otherwise wasted space. I like it!
White seats = not practical! I just wish they had a hatchback too.
Practical - no, but they look great and bring so much more light into the cabin that Amy previous black seats. They do have a hatchback - it's called the Model Y!
@@PaulsViewsReviews True! I don’t think I’m alone, but the model y is butt ugly. Only certain colours make it acceptable. Is too big either way.
I think it isn't too pretty, but the facelifted version should be much improved.
Quick question. I just bought 2020 model 3 performance with FSD for $20k(after $4k used ev credit) at my local tesla dealership. Obviously, it has pretty high miles on it. About 90k miles. 1 private owner. No accident. I'm kinda scared of high mileage Ev, but I wanted to give it a try since it has FSD. What do you think about this deal?
Hey. I’m not sure on US pricing and the amount of stock available to you, but that sounds like a great deal to me! Keep us informed as you enjoy it.
the frunk can handle a big duffle or small roller
Without a doubt - I should have mentioned it!
How was this experience? I've been doing this and it is satisfying seeing the scale number go down but I am worried about muscle mass being lost...
I found it really interesting. Your muscle mass is vulnerable so that’s why it is so important to keep doing some resistance exercises and keep protein intake as high as the calories allow. Gives you the best chance to combat the loss!
Im on day 26 of the power 600... 16 lbs down but you started thinner than did I.
Assume that's 600 calories as day? That's an incredible result - well done!
I've seen many videos on these buttons, somehow you managed to show the full potential, wonderful!
Happy to help!
Don’t think the books does “net” calories. It’s just 800 calories a day no matter what.
It’s true, but the book DOES say do moderate exercise every day and that’s not what I was doing. I complete 600 calorie HIIT workouts, which are far from ‘moderate’, because that is my routine. A net calorie intake of just 200 calories, had I not eaten extra, would have been damaging for my health. I had to make the decision to modify that element to meet my needs.
The craziest thing is that your starting weight/physique would be considered 'slim' and 'healthy/fit' in general here in the States, because most average males, especially in your age bracket are bigger (or in many cases, MUCH bigger) than you. So that shows you how skewed our concept of health and weight have gotten over the past 2 to 3 or 4 decades!
Why not just use Voice Control (while driving)?
You certainly can for many functions, and I certainly don't use it enough, but you can't have voice control make several functions happen at once. Plus, there's the functions which the car doesn't actually offer but the Commander unit will. Use both!
The code 'Paul' dont work?
That’s odd - I’ve just tested it and it does for me. What country are you shipping to, as that might make a difference because of retailers in your country?
@@PaulsViewsReviews Denmark
@@tnielsen6876 that’s the only explanation I can think of, as I know there are different distribution models globally. Perhaps send them a message and see of they’ll honour it - they’re really nice people to deal with.

He didn't compare the quietness level on the motorway between the two cars. Driving refinement is supposed to be a major strength of the new Model 3.
I literally shared a decibel measurement between the two cars?
Yes, did not hear any talk about window and road noise, great review nonetheless
@@PaulsViewsReviews , yes, at about 24 minutes, the dB measurement comparison appears fleetingly as a text on the screen (on the motorway, 65dB for the new model vs. 75dB), thanks.
@@psandbergnz The new model is definitely quieter, thanks to the enhanced sound reduction measures and double glazing all round. It’s still not as quiet as a typical German saloon, I have to admit, but it’s certainly an improvement and the gap is smaller.
@@PaulsViewsReviews , thanks, I hope I will find a comparison somewhere between the new Volvo ex30 and the new Tesla model 3 in terms of noise levels. That could be decisive for me in my choice.
Still sticking with our diesel SUV.
The beauty of choice! I used to love my diesel SUVs, from the X-Trail to Q7, but I’m happy with the move.
Very nice and useful video ♥♥
Very kind, thank you.
I've been using Enhance's product called the Knob for the past few weeks, and it's a fantastic addition to my "Y." The software and hardware work seamlessly, and as you pointed out, updates to the product are available via OTA. Enhance Auto's customer support has been fantastic. Let's face it; Tesla designed the center screen for cost-saving reasons, and contrary to what Mr. Musk says, No part isn't always the best part. I'd rather press a button and play with a screen at high speeds. Yes, Tesla has voice commands, which aren't very well documented, and the voice commands don't work on every object available on the center screen. I have no affiliation with Enhance Auto; I just think they've produced fantastic products.
It was actually the 'S3XY Knob' that got my attention and I pre-ordered one for my car in May (it's not available for the Model 3 'Highland' until August). I then reached out to Enhance Auto to share my channel and ask if they could send me my pre-ordered Knob from the first batch to allow me to make a video ASAP. They came back to me, said they liked my content and were appreciative of the fact that I had purchased a product to use and review, rather than just emailed asking for freebies (which I imagine they get a lot), that they sent me a set of Buttons and the Commander module to review in the meantime! I was blown away! Great comms, great people AND great products!
Great video, cheers.
Thanks very much 👍🏼
In Canada, the measure of the “boot” would be whether you could fit your ice hockey bag. Also, would it fit a goalie bag, or just a regular bag?
My son used to play roller hockey and so I’m familiar with the bags - They are pretty significant!
Until you get pulled over for not having approved DOT/EU lights and impersonating a police car 😂
Fear not, I never used them on the move.
How are the indicator buttons on a roundabout , which in the UK we have a ton of? I can only think it is a distraction having to find the right one in that situation
I’m getting used to it. You have to think in terms of the left one being slighter closer to the edge than the right, rather than top and bottom, so you don’t need to look at the wheel every time. It’s still a learning curve.
@@PaulsViewsReviews @SNORKYMEDIA You can put a s3xy button in the bottom triangle of the steering wheel. When pressed, let it indicate left in case ok UK (I have it right as I'm living in Belgium). When in a roundabout, it is in a perfect spot to press when you have to leave, and this solves for me all problems I had with the indicator buttons.
Very good video - Can you program a button to turn climate on/off for the backseat ?
You sure can!

Hi Paul. I am indeed a Preston lad - well spotted with regards the map! I've not been quite as vigilant with the dieting as I should, but I'm happy enough. An E MTB is a great choice for the fantastic Guild Wheel, though I also like my motorbikes, so don't get on it enough these days. Wow I had no idea this much functionally and fine tuning was offered with the SEXY buttons / command module.

just received my SEXY buttons, your video is very helpful with the setup.
Excellent! They’re better than I expected but that Commander module is the jewel in the crown. Automatic Autopilot re-engagement and hold the handle to open the frunk is just fab! That alone is worth the money.
